Leather or Faux Leather Trays for Hotel Guestrooms?
Sourcing guestroom trays for hotel supply? Compare leather and faux leather by material specification, finish and cleaning requirements before a wholesale order.

A hotel-supply distributor may compare two guestroom trays with similar brown surfaces—one described as leather and the other as faux leather. The photographs alone do not explain which version belongs in the buyer’s range.
Choose a defined leather version when genuine leather is part of the requirement and its care directions suit the intended use. Consider a specified faux leather version when synthetic alternatives are acceptable and the finished product meets the purchasing brief.
If neither option suits the required cleaning routine, review another product rather than choosing by appearance alone.
Define the Guestroom Use Before Comparing Materials
Identify where the tray will be placed, what it will hold and any expected contact with spills or damp items.
A tray for keys and small personal belongings presents a different brief from one positioned beside drinks or bathroom amenities.
State any requirement beyond decorative organization, including carrying items or direct food contact. These uses need separate confirmation for the selected product.
For hotel-supply distributors, describe the application you intend to offer to customers rather than using “hotel quality” as the complete specification.
Leather: Confirm the Type and Surface Finish
First establish which parts of the tray are leather. The product may also contain a supporting structure, metal frame or other components.
Ask for the proposed leather type and finish. Grain visibility, sheen and response to liquids can differ between specifications.
Leather Naturally’s care guidance distinguishes aniline and pigmented leather, including differences in finish and liquid absorption. This distinction does not identify the leather used in any particular tray.
Where natural markings form part of the selection, agree an appearance reference and discuss acceptable variation. Natural variation does not replace finished-product quality requirements.
A general “leather” description leaves important purchasing details unresolved.
Faux Leather: Identify the Proposed Material
“Faux leather” and “leatherette” do not identify one uniform material.
Request the actual composition, such as a polyurethane-based or PVC-based covering where applicable, together with an identifiable material reference.
Review colour, grain and gloss against that specific proposal. Similar-looking synthetic materials should not be treated as interchangeable.
If avoiding animal-derived materials is a purchasing requirement, clarify its scope. The description of the visible surface alone does not establish the composition of the complete product.
Compare Defined Versions Against the Same Brief
Use the same requirements when reviewing leather and faux leather alternatives.
Requirement | What to establish |
|---|---|
Material | The proposed specification and where it is used |
Appearance | Colour, grain, sheen and acceptable variation |
Intended exposure | Suitability for the stated guestroom application |
Cleaning | Applicable instructions and restrictions |
Quotation | The material version, construction and supplied components |
Identify construction differences between proposals. A price difference cannot automatically be attributed to leather versus faux leather when the tray designs or included components also differ.
One buyer may require genuine leather as part of its product description. Another may accept either material but require compatibility with a particular housekeeping routine. Their selection criteria differ even when the desired colour is the same.
Check the Required Cleaning Method
If a hotel requires a particular cleaner or disinfectant, identify the product and intended use conditions before material approval.
Ask what information supports its use on the selected finished tray. “Wipe-clean” does not establish compatibility with every housekeeping chemical.
Care directions should cover the assembled product, including exposed edges and other materials. Guidance for an unrelated leather or coated fabric should not be applied automatically.
Where the proposed product conflicts with a firm cleaning requirement, review another specification. An unresolved combination should not be described as suitable for that requirement.
Select a Material Version for the Wholesale Enquiry
Its catalogue identifies iron and leather. The detailed leather specification and applicable care directions require confirmation. A faux leather alternative also needs a separate feasibility review; the listing does not establish that both versions are available.
For a continuing supply item, retain the selected tray reference together with its material and finish reference. A later proposal using another material should be identified as an alternative.
